A Dream Stay

Kindness is an Extra Service
We stayed in number 1963 which was next to the main building, so disappointingly didn't have any access to the 'communal areas' or 'cafe' we thought we would have. The bed was made daily and toilet roll replaced, but we found it a bit strange that we didn't see a single member of staff for the whole 10 days we were there.
I left my iPod in the room by mistake and contacted the b&b to see if they could send it if I covered the postage costs from Italy to the UK, but was told that it was an 'extra service' and would cost €30 on top of the €15 postage cost. I would've been happy to sub them an extra fiver or so for the effort, but thought that a service charge twice the amount of the postage cost was absolutely ridiculous. Especially considering we'd not received any face to face service from the staff throughout our stay, I was disappointed that a simple trip to the post office would cost so much, and that the emails we received from Nicola on the subject were so cold and impersonal.
I'd like to think that if someone left something at my work place, I'd make the effort to return it to them if they covered the basic postage cost. People leave things behind sometimes and it would've been a simple and nice thing to do. It's a shame that everything comes down to money these days; what happened to good will?
Although we were aware before arrival that breakfast too would come at a cost, we were a bit perplexed that for somewhere marketed as a 'b&b', the second 'b' was an 'extra service' too. Also - there was coffee and teabags but nowhere to boil water, so bring a travel kettle if you're not the cold coffee type.
All that said, San Stae is a lovely area and it was good to be close to nice restaurants and cheap bars.

Flat CaCorte was great value and comfortable oasis!
The location was good and really reasonable for the price of the room. It's in the quiet San Croce neighborhood, closest to the San Stae vaporetto stop. It's about a 20 min walk from train station (definitely use the city signs and don't attempt using a map your first time through to find 'shortcuts), 12 mins to Rialto Bridge, and 30 mins to San Marco. Easiest to take vaporetto from train station (especially with wheeled luggage), but it's only 2 stops and each trip is about $10. If your used to carrying your bag and don't mind maybe getting lost, it's fine to walk to hotel. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, and great to stroll around at night. There are a few small restaurants and stores in the neighborhood but most major sites are 15+ min walk.
Only real complaint was about the reception. Despite calling from train station per instructions to notify of arrival, we had to knock for 10 minutes before someone answered door, only to be told by owner to stop knocking and wait outside until he was done checking in a couple. Once we actually started to check in, we realized why - we got an unsolicited 15 min detailed itinerary of where to go, what to do, where to eat, etc. It would have been helpful if you arrived in Venice with no plans, but otherwise was kind of overboard (especially when there was another couple waiting outside to check in). Owner was in general nice, and runs a good place, but warned us that after check-in guests are on their own, since it's essentially a collection of apts/rooms rather than a regular hotel or hostel.
Overall, loved the privacy and comfort, and would definitely stay here again.
