Great Budget Place in the Centre of Rhodes Old Town

Medieval Rose is extremely well located being just off the main shopping street in Rhodes Old Town. Despite its location, it’s still very quiet. The accommodation is quite basic being more akin to a budget hotel on one of the islands; it is not a boutique hotel but it offers tremendous value for money and is a great base for exploring the Old Town.
The room itself was spacious with a comfortable bed and soft pillows. Storage space was limited but, as we only stayed for 2 nights, this was not a concern for us. There was a good shower in the en-suite bathroom. Toiletries and 2 large bottles of water were provided. There was also a fridge, kettle and hairdryer in the room.
The host, Olga, was incredibly friendly and helpful, advising us on restaurants and other matters. She, her husband and young daughter slept in the room next to ours and there were often friends visiting. This gave the feeling that you were a guest in someone’s home rather than an anonymous visitor.
Medieval Rose has a range of rooms including those with en-suites and others with shared bathrooms. It offers great value for accommodation in the heart of the Old Town so long as you don’t require luxury. And Olga is a great host, her personality provides another dimension to the accommodation.

lovely place

the hotel is located in the center of the old town and is very close to its main street (recomended to hang-out there at night). the staff is absolutely fantastic and cosy- they give you the feeling of a good freind. also, the staff are very friendly in terms of help and recomendations around rhodes, they helped me and my girlfreind to get around and were very helpful even before our arrival at rhodes and the hotel. so again, very recomended and lovely people.

We stayed just one night to catch the ship the next morning. Excellent value for money because the hotel is in the centre, it is beautiful and characteristic and the staff is very kind. We’ll come back!

Delightful stay, memorable hospitality

This is a small family run pension style boutique hotel in the old town of Rhodes, almost on the ancient walls and ramparts of the medieval city. I stayed here for three nights in mid June and had a delightful time. The ground floor courtyard facing room comprised two large single beds and an ensuite bathroom with a good pressure shower.
I slept well, the bed was comfortable and relaxing. The room also had air conditioning but I only used it once. I generally slept with windows open (seemed perfectly safe; there are grills), but one night there were quite a few other guests outside in the courtyard chatting, not late, but I wanted an early sleep due to the last effects of jet lag and I had had a long day at the beach and in the sun. I therefore decided to close the windows that night, it instantly blocked out the noise, and I switched on the air conditioning to cool the room and that was it - bliss. Generally I don't like aircon and try to avoid it, so I turned it off when I woke up a few hours later, all was silent and I opened the windows again and went back to sleep.
The owners of Medieval Rose Hotel, Olga and Vasilis, are kind, helpful and welcoming. I had a superb breakfast one morning, delicious (the rest of the time I tried various local bakeries and cafes, but would well recommend the hotel's breakfast as well). From memory they had a choice between Greek and English breakfast. I choose the Greek one, with a tasty spinach and feta pie, breads and pastries.
One day when I was on my way to Kallithea springs, Olga asked me if I wanted to go to the markets, but I couldn't join her as I had already made plans for the day. Therefore she asked me if I wanted some fresh berries and she would get them for me. After I returned from Kallithea late that afternoon there they were for me; an amazing plate and punnet of fresh strawberries and cherries (see photo). My only regret is that I didn't eat them quickly enough, they were still good the next morning but I do recommend having them straight away if you're lucky enough to get them. Olga and Vasilis were helpful with advice and information about taxis, buses and transport on the island. I will always associate my stay in Rhodes with their hospitality.
The Medieval Rose Hotel is also well priced, I paid about €46,50 per night for my room, which is about a third cheaper than equivalent accomodation in my home country (New Zealand). In fact this kind of boutique small accomodation doesn't really exist at home or in nearby Australia, and any equivalent would be a rather impersonalised motel which would be about 40% more in price. So the cost of the accomodation and value for money is excellent. Good value accomodation applies across Greece; it's actually cheaper for me to holiday in Greece than it is at home.
Even though Rhodes Old City is heavily touristic, it remains attractive and appealing, the old cobblestoned streets, the ramparts and walls, the knights's palace all guarding the sea, the cobalt blue Mediterranean. Greece is a country of the night; people enjoy themselves late in the evenings and everything is alive and vibrant then. I'm also a night owl so this suits me fine, even at home I regularly have dinner at 10pm at night (a habit I developed after first travelling in Greece in 2005), but I do recommend seeing Rhodes Old City in the early morning, from about 7am, it's fairly quiet until around 9.30am, all the shops are shuttered up, the streets are quiet, the dawn is cool and fresh, a lovely time to walk the streets and explore its alleyways and passages. The other trip that benefits from an early start is to Lindos. I got there around 8am before the crowds arrived and there was hardly anyone there at the top of the ancient acropolis and I managed to get an excellent sunbed at a local beach - people who arrived from around 11am onwards struggled to find anything. I also went to Kallithea for the day, one of my favourite places on Rhodes. I'm mentioning these here because I have a policy of not reviewing non accomodation providers (I only review accomodation) on TripAdvisor, but all are accessible from this delightful place to stay: The Medieval Rose Hotel. I would definitely stay here again. And I would stay for longer.
